Core steps and equipment
Feed preparation: Oilseed Cleaning Machine, Sheller Machine, and Oilseed Flaking Machine and Screw Oil Press the feed. Good flakes help solvent contact.
Rotocel extractor: Solvent percolates flakes in a continuous rotor shell. Rotocel gives high throughput and stable operation. Typical extraction efficiency exceeds 95%.
Wet meal handling and DT: Wet meal goes to the desolventizer-toaster (DT). DT removes residual solvent and toasts meal without damaging protein quality. DT operates near 105–110°C under vacuum.
Miscella evaporation and stripping: Mixed oil (miscella) is concentrated by evaporators. Stripping towers remove dissolved solvent to make crude oil. Vapors then go to condensers.
Solvent recovery and condensation: Condensers and absorption towers recover n-hexane from vapors. Efficient recovery keeps solvent loss low.
Crude oil tank: Collected crude oil is stored and sent for refining. Tanks include vents and solvent safety features.
Solvent note: No.6 solvent oil (n-hexane)
The solvent commonly used is No.6 solvent oil, known in industry as n-hexane. n-Hexane dissolves neutral oils efficiently and evaporates at manageable temperatures.
